Black Coffee in dock over speeding

Journalists swarmed the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court as DJ Black Coffee made a brief appearance on a speeding charge.

Johannesburg - Popular house-music DJ Black Coffee made a brief appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of speeding.

The DJ, dressed in a black suit, sat in the public gallery with his actress wife Mbali Mlotshwa and a friend while waiting for his turn to get into the dock.

Another man used his body to constantly shield the DJ from the eyes of the media.

His was a brief appearance as the case was postponed in order for the defence to be handed the docket.

Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, is expected back in court on Tuesday.

“The State prosecutor is charging you with one count of speeding. I’m informed that the investigation is complete,” the magistrate said.

Black Coffee was arrested on Christmas Eve after he was caught driving his blue Maserati at 200km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 highway near the Maraisburg bridge.

He was arrested and taken to Florida police station, where he was later released on R800 bail.

Black Coffee had to wait in the dock for a lengthy amount of time while the magistrate dealt with several other suspects sitting next to him.

His case was one of the last to be heard.

Afterwards, he managed to sneak out through a back entrance of the court to avoid photographers waiting for him at the main entrance.

His lawyer later emerged from the main entrance and drove off in his gold BMW.

Following his arrest, Black Coffee posted an apology on his Twitter and Facebook accounts, saying he had been called to a family emergency while on his way to a gig.

“I am aware that this is the season most rife with road carnage, therefore, adhering to the road laws, taking the necessary precautions in line with our country’s Arrive Alive campaign I’m inclined to express my deepest regrets,” he wrote.
