One dead, 17 hurt in taxi crash

A woman was killed and 17 others injured after a taxi rolled down an embankment in KwaZuluNatal.

Johannesburg – A woman was killed and 17 others injured on Tuesday afternoon after a taxi rolled down an embankment in KwaZuluNatal, ER24 paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the accident occurred on Edendale Road in Pietermaritzburg.

“ER24 paramedics, along with other services, responded to the scene, and on arrival found the taxi at the bottom of a small embankment. Occupants from the vehicle were scattered across the scene.”

Meiring said on assessment the body of the woman was found motionless a few metres away from the taxi. “Unfortunately the woman had already succumbed to her multiple, fatal injuries.”

The other 17 passengers sustained moderate injuries, and were treated before they were transported to various hospitals for further assistance.

The cause of the collision is not yet known, but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
