MEP Kaljurand welcomes Armenia’s commitment to peace and democratic reforms

YEREVAN, July 16. /ARKA/. Marina Kaljurand, a Member of the European Parliament and, until recently, the head of the European Parliament delegation for relations with the South Caucasus, welcomed Armenia’s commitment to peace and democratic reforms in a statement she published on Monday./pp

Kaljurand issued the statement as she was leaving her Head of the South Caucasus delegation position./pp “The dynamic development of [the EU-Armenia] ties has been underpinned by Armenia’s steadfast commitment to democratic reforms, even in the most difficult times,” she wrote in the statement published on X, formerly Twitter./pp

Kaljurand also said she regretted the repeated decision of the Azerbaijani leadership to resort to force, and mentioned the “forced displacement of the entire population of Nagorno-Karabakh”./pp “I applaud the concessions made by the Armenian government [aimed at normalization of the relations between Yerevan and Baku]. It is essential that both sides abandon maximalist positions in the name of peace,” she wrote./pp

Kaljurand also said she is concerned by the “massive repression of civil liberties in Azerbaijan” and the “steps taken by the Georgian government which are in direct contradiction with [the country’s European] aspirations and jeopardize the country’s European future.”/pp br/p
