Durban - Three men, one identified as an uMlazi taxi rank manager, were shot dead on Thursday afternoon at the Prince Mshiyeni taxi rank, across the road from the Glebelands Hostel. A fourth man is fighting for his life.

Provincial police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said the four were sitting in a private car at about 4pm when four men approached them and opened fire.

Three of the men died at the scene.

“At this stage, the motive for the shooting is unclear and no arrests have been made. Available information regarding the number of shots fired or bullet casings found at the scene, or whether the shooting is taxi violence-related, is sketchy,” Zwane said.

Glebelands Hostel dwellers who spoke to the Daily News said the shootings were unrelated to the violence at the hostel.

They said the victims were not hostel residents and that the killings could be taxi-related given that a rank manager was among the dead.

Gerald Ferror, president of the KZN Taxi Alliance, said he had not heard about the shooting late on Thursday because he had been attending to a family bereavement.

A witness said she had just arrived at the rank when the shooting started.

“I was not far from the car when four guys emerged from the nearby bushes, carrying pistols. They fired at the car simultaneously.

“Somebody pushed me to the ground and I broke my tibia. Everyone took cover and after a while the gunmen disappeared,” said the witness.

She said she used the rank every day, to and from work.
