Durban - A sudden downpour flooded several streets in Ladysmith in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.

The Klip River, which flows near the town, also overflowed in places. The downpour happened between 4.30pm and 6pm, an emergency services worker said.

Businesswoman Shenaaz Singh said blocked stormwater drains exacerbated the problem. Her tyre workshop was flooded after a boundary wall collapsed because of the build-up of water on the roadside. Cars could not cross low-lying bridges. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

There is no news yet on the impact of the rain on dam levels.
