Durban - The “hobbled” Durban Flying Squad is on the road to recovery, after its dwindling fleet of cars was beefed up this week.

The Daily News published a story last Tuesday, saying the front-line unit did not have enough vehicles at its disposal.

Some of the cars in the fleet were old, ill-equipped and low-performance.

Yesterday, a unit member said the fleet still included some older model cars prone to faults, but said the squad was pleased with the action taken.

He said one shift now had five vehicles at its disposal and the other, eight.

At least one of the newly added cars was unused, while some were vehicles that had been released from the garage.

He said they had not expected a fleet of new cars as that would have been unrealistic, but they hoped the cars released from the garage had undergone proper repair work.

Unit members had previously complained that cars released from the garage had not been properly repaired.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said a full investigation was done by provincial management.
