Armenian economist says transition to parliamentary republic is still early
YEREVAN, October 28. / ARKA /. Economist Tatul Manaseryan said today Armenia’s transition to a parliamentary form of governance is premature.
Manaseryan, who is head of a local “Alternative" think tank, argued that it is too early to replace the current semi-presidential form of government with a parliamentary republic as the package of reforms contain some risks ‘because being aimed at the future, they challenge today's reality."
He, however, praised the proposed changes relating to economy saying they are very progressive when compared to the current constitution.
The package of constitutional reforms, which introduce a plan to change the governance system of the country from the so-called semi-presidential to parliamentary republic, was approved by Armenia parliament with the vote of 104 to 10 and 3 abstentions on October 5. The reforms will be put to a referendum on December 6.-0-
