Armenian lifers’ conditions to improve
YEREVAN, October 28. / ARKA /. Armenian lifers will have their prison conditions improved and the number of visits by relatives doubled, justice minister Arpine Hovhannisyan told a parliamentary Q&A session today.
She said now lifers serve their sentences in narrow confinements, however, in 2015 alone 9 lifers were moved into semi-narrow confinement with better conditions.
She said also the ministry is preparing to send to parliament a package of legislative changes relating to the problem of convicts sentenced to life in prison. In general, according to the minister, the government is working to address their problems.
She said although the new prison that will open in December in Armavir will not resolve all the problems of prison population, it will allow to noticeably improve the conditions of prisons kept in closed and semi-closed confinement.
In 2014 the Armenian government released 875 million drams for the construction of a new penitentiary institution in Armavir designed for 400 prisoners -0-
