|||Port Elizabeth - SuperSport United got back to winning ways in the league when they beat Chippa United 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday night.
A goal in each half by defender Clayton Daniels and striker Jeremy Brockie respectively helped the former PSL champions record just their second win of the campaign.
SuperSport came into the match on the back of four successive league defeats, but recently gained a bit of confidence by seeing off Golden Arrows in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout.
Their New Zealand frontman Brockie had the first real chance of the match in the 10th minute, but his header was directed straight at Chippa goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
Chippa, who have recorded one of their best starts to a league season, came into the clash with three wins from their first seven PSL outings. After a quiet start, they started to string more and more passes together in the second quarter of the match.
The skilful Mark Mayambela had a great chance to open the scoring for Chippa in the 20th minute, but SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams managed to hold on to his effort. Chippa defender James Okwuosa then headed wide of Williams' goal six minutes later, as the home side started to dictate proceedings in midfield.
However, it would be SuperSport that opened the scoring in the 41st minute, when central defender Daniels beat Akpeyi with a header after a lovely assist by midfielder Thuso Phala.
The visitors dominated the start of the second half, with their attacking duo of Brockie and Kingston Nkhatha causing the Chippa defence all sorts of strife. And the two combined beautifully in the 60th minute, but Akpeyi denied Nkhatha's effort.
Akpeyi again came to Chippa's rescue three minutes later when he saved Phala's shot after a flowing SuperSport move, which included some neat touches.
Chippa then had great chance in the 69th minute when Mayambela whipped in a dangerous free kick, but Williams managed to punch the ball to safety.
But SuperSport's talisman Brockie made sure of the victory and the three points when he poked home a Phala free kick with his left foot in the 84th minute. - ANA
