|||Cape Town - Two children were killed when a wall of a derelict building collapsed, close to a slipway in Hawston, near Hermanus.
A third child was freed from the rubble and is in hospital fighting for his life.
Robert Daniels, spokesman for Western Cape emergency and forensic pathology services, confirmed the incident yesterday.
“Two children died and a third was trapped under the building’s rubble after a wall collapsed on them at a construction site on Marine Drive in Hawston near Hermanus on Saturday afternoon.”
Daniels said the child was in a critical condition.
Witnesses told Weekend Argus that paramedics and rescue Services had freed the child, who was taken to Worcester Hospital.
Jene Adendorff, a Hawston resident familiar with the area, said the children had been for a swim and were sunbathing when the wall collapsed.
“This is a tragedy for this community and might have been averted,” said Adendorff.
