#Feeshavefallen: Cops face brutality probe
The Western Cape provincial police ombudsman said it will probe the way police dealt with the #FeesMustFall students.
|||Cape Town - The Western Cape provincial police ombudsman said on Friday that it was investigating the way in which the police dealt with students during the #FeesMustFall protests this week.
The Western Cape Government has received confirmation from the provincial police ombudsman, advocate Vusi Pikoli that his office would be “initiating an investigation into SAPS handling of the #FeesMustFall protests this week”.
Pikoli said the way the SAPS handled the students would be probed further.
Earlier on Friday, Zille visited Stellenbosch University where she engaged with students for two hours.
Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said: “Students are rightfully angry about university affordability. They expressed concerns about how SAPS has dealt with protests”.
She added: “The Police Ombudsman investigation is an opportunity for students to come forward with their complaints. The Community Safety Department also has ‘watching briefs’ teams monitoring all court cases involving student protesters”.
“We call on students who have been allegedly mistreatment by SAPS to come forward and assist the Ombudsman investigation,” she said.
Members of the public have also been urged to report their complaints to the office of the Police Ombudsman.
