Cape Town - A Ceres man accused of killing another man for being gay, shocked a court when he claimed he can tell when someone is homosexual by looking at them.

Murder accused Christo Oncke, 29, took the stand to testify in his own defence at the Cape High Court sitting in Ceres on Thursday.

He is accused of beating, strangling and burning David Olyne, 23, on March 22 on a farm in the area.

Oncke claims he met David for the first time that day and was lured to the farm dam’s pipe house.

He said David tried to pull his pants down to perform oral sex on him.

Oncke testified: “He smiled and pulled my pants down to suck me and I pulled them up again and said it was not going to happen.

“But then he [David] got angry and grabbed me by the chest to hit me but I punched him in the mouth first.

“I gave him five punches which caused him to fall to his knees and then I kicked him on his shoulders and trampled on his right side after he fell.”

Oncke said three men with knives appeared and tried to attack him and he ran to the dam where youngsters were drinking alcohol.

Four of the youths previously testified Oncke ran to them for help saying “moffies” (gays) were assaulting him.

All four stated when they went to investigate they only found a bleeding and bound David.

Oncke then contradicted himself and said he told the teens two gay men were attacking him but couldn’t explain where his attackers had vanished to.

Judge Siraj Desai asked how he knew the men were “moffies”.

Oncke replied: “I could just tell, you can tell if a person is a bunny (gay) or not.

“What I meant was I could not tell whether they were moffies, other things, normal people or just jintoes (prostitutes),” he said.

Oncke denied the statements by State witnesses who claimed they saw him assault a tied up David and drag his burnt body outside the pipe house.

He also dismissed claims he was chanting “burn, fire burn” as he torched David’s corpse.

The trial continues.
