Man arrested for rape, robbery

Durban - Pietermaritzburg police pounced on a 39-year old man who allegedly robbed and raped a Prestbury woman on Monday.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, confirmed that police arrested the man early on Wednesday. He will appear in the city’s magistrate’s court on Friday charged with house robbery, rape, and theft of a motor vehicle.

“The suspect was arrested at Sweetwaters after the members followed up information about his whereabouts. Goods that were taken during the house robbery were also recovered,” Zwane said.

According to Zwane, the victim was at her home at Prestbury at 9am on Monday, and was cleaning the house when she was approached by the suspect.

“The suspect grabbed the victim, tied her up and raped her. The suspect demanded cash and took the TV set, DVD, speakers, amplifiers and car keys,” said Zwane.

The victim’s VW Polo was used as the getaway vehicle. She managed to free herself after four hours and seek help.
