Durban - Greytown in the KwaZulu-Natal interior will feel the pinch with severe water restrictions being placed on residents in the wake of a province-wide drought.

The KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube called on Greytown residents to abide by the new water restrictions that have been implemented in the wake of Lake Marthley water levels dropping to 10%.

According to Dube-Ncube the water supply will be restricted to four hours a day and will apply from 4am to 8am.

Residents must make use of water from the 85 JoJo tanks located around Greytown outside these hours.

“Our province is facing a tough time with this drought and this calls for extreme measures,” said Dube-Ncube.

The uMvoti Municipality is drilling additional boreholes to supply its water treatment plant with water and when completed it will be the only source of water for residents.

Greytown resident, Aphiwe Phungula, said that while they were shocked, they would abide by the restrictions.
