Durban - A security guard at a Durban school was shot after he allegedly attempted to stab his boss, police reported on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the security guard and his boss became embroiled in an argument at a primary school on Tuesday evening.

Zwane said it is alleged that the security guard tried to stab his boss, who retaliated by shooting him in the shoulder and the abdomen.

Riot police were called in to disperse about 500 residents of the Bottlebrush informal settlement, but not before they had set alight two cars belonging to the security company.

Zwane said the security boss was taken to hospital in a critical condition, and is under police guard.

Zwane said a case of murder has been opened.
