Long sentences for road rage killers
A KZN judge sentenced three men to lengthy prison terms for the murder of a man who was killed after he crashed into one of the men’s vehicle.
|||Durban – A court in KwaZulu-Natal has sentenced three men to lengthy prison terms for the murder of a man who was killed after he had accidentally crashed into one of the men’s vehicle.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the Verulam Magistrates’ Court convicted and sentenced Bradley Pillay, 32, Damien Shunmugan, 19, and Deon Govender, 35, for murder of a 48-year-old man.
“On 28 December 2013 the accused were celebrating their friend’s birthday at Queenspark Crescent in Phoenix when the deceased mistakenly collided into one of the accused’s vehicle.
“The three pulled him out of his vehicle and viciously assaulted him. Two policemen who were passing by, tried to intervene and the back-up was called. The deceased was declared dead at the scene.”
Zwane said: “The three accused were immediately arrested and charged for murder. Pillay was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, Shunmugan and Govender were both sentenced to 18 years imprisonment.”
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, welcomed the sentences,saying: “Their sentences send a strong message to those who intend to take law into their own hands.”
