KZN family massacre: details emerge
It is believed 3 people entered the home after midnight and attacked the sleeping family, KZN’s Social Development MEC said.
|||Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal Social Development Department on Wednesday expressed shock over the killing of eight family members in the province.
In response to the horrific killings, in which eight members of the Mncwabe family were murdered in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the KZN Social Development MEC Weziwe Thusi said the department had “dispatched six social workers and their supervisor to the Mabaleni area of Umzumbe Municipality”.
She said the social workers would provide assistance to survivors of the brutal attack and the community.
“We understand that such incidents hurt the families involved and leave scars in the entire community,” she said.
“It is believed that three people entered the home after midnight and attacked the sleeping family. Three women aged 30, 32 and 60, four children aged one, three and 15 were bludgeoned to death while a 70-year-old man who was sleeping in a nearly rondavel was burnt to death.”
She added that reports seem to suggest that the murders were “part of a feud within the Mncwabe family that started following the death of a nine-year-old child who was buried last weekend”.
Emphasising the importance of conflict resolution, she said: “This situation could have been avoided had any member of this family approached our social workers in order to defuse the dispute when it started.”
She urged people to speak to the department’s social workers to resolve their issues.
“I would like to take this opportunity to call on other families who may be feuding for whatever reason to approach their local Social Workers in order to avoid a repeat of this tragic incident.”
