Durban - The final examinations of the matric class of 2015 got under way on Monday as pupils sat for the computer applications technology paper.

Things went relatively smoothly, but one Phoenix school, Woodview Secondary, had to send their matric pupils to the neighbouring Palmview Secondary because they have had no electricity for months.

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education spokesman, Muzi Mahlambi, said the pupils shared resources for the examination which required the use of a computer.

Woodview Secondary’s lights were disconnected because of an unpaid electricity bill.

He said the department was aware of the problem and said the two schools would share resources again on Tuesday for the information technology final examination which also requires a computer for the examination.

“It is a temporary arrangement because they need computers; for the rest of the exams they will go back to their school,” he said.

In the rest of the province, Mahlambi said the 5 490 full-time and 304 part-time pupils who sat for the CAT paper one exam on Monday morning did so without any problems.

“It was a good start to the exams for the province,” Mahlambi said.

At Durban Girls’ High School, 11 girls sat for the first paper and felt it was generally fair, with one of them saying it was better than the trial exam.

Jana de Bruin, who hopes to study medicine at Shangdong University in China next year, said she felt nervous before her first exam.

“I don’t know, I always get a bit nervous during exams,” said the pupil with full academic colours. “It was a bit challenging, but I performed to the best of my ability and I’m hopeful my hard work paid off today,” she said.

Therese Munga, said she felt the paper was slightly less challenging than the internally set trial exam.

“There were some challenges here and there, but it was not that bad,” she said.

Munga hopes to study BComm in accounting and economics at Varsity College next year.

Danette Aroolandan, who wants to study teaching at Varsity College next year, said she was content with her first exam and felt it was “fine”.
