|||Johannesburg - A police officer’s wife became the latest victim of a case of alleged mistaken identity when she was gunned down by a group of police officers.
Constance Mabule, spouse of a Sandton police officer, was declared dead at the scene in her cousin’s driveway in Phomolong, Tembisa, on Friday night.
The cousin and another relative sustained moderate injuries during the shooting, while a neighbour was hurt when she was hit by a stray bullet.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesman Robbie Raburabu said a case of murder as well as three cases of attempted murder had been opened.
He explained that the five SAPS officers as well as two reservists, travelling in a patrol vehicle, had been on the hunt for criminals in the area when they were attacked.
When the cops spotted Mabule’s vehicle, which matched the model and colour of the suspects’ vehicle, they immediately opened fire.
The woman was with three of her relatives, and they were travelling from Alexandra to Phomolong.
The officers cornered the group when they arrived at a house belonging to Mabule’s cousin in Phomolong, and started shooting.
