Armenia’s relations with Iran are based on centuries-old friendship and mutual respect

YEREVAN, October 15. / ARKA /. Armenian-Iranian relations are based on centuries-old friendship and mutual respect, Armenian prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan said Thursday at the opening of Armenian-Iranian business forum in Yerevan.

"We highly appreciate Armenia’s relations with Iran and I am convinced that the new political situation in the region will enable us to deepen them further and today's business forum is the best confirmation of it," he said.

Abrahamyan said Armenia’s textile and processing industries, transport and tourism are very likely to interest Iranian business people. He said also the construction of the North-South transport corridor, as well as the planned Iran-Armenia railway are very important in terms of for boosting bilateral ties, while the construction of the third power transmission line between Armenia and Iran and the Meghri HPP will give a new push to regional development.

Iran’s first vice president Es’haq Jahangiri who arrived in Armenia on a two-day official visit Wednesday, said Armenia is the only country that can serve as a platform for Iranian companies to sell their goods in the Eurasian Economic Union.

He said Iranian businessmen can  produce part of goods in Iran and another part in Armenia and then export them to EEU countries.

Jahangiri said  while political relationship n between the two countries is  high, the same can not be said about trade and economic relations. He also said the North - South transport corridor and the Iran - Armenia railway are projects of regional significance and Iran is ready to help implement them.
The forum was attended by over 170 Armenian and 75 Iranian business people.

According to the National Statistical Service, Armenia's trade turnover with Iran in the first  8 months of 2015 stood at $178.1 million, an increase of 0.5% from the same period last year .--
