YEREVAN, September 23. /ARKA/. Yerevan's Council of Elders (the legislative assembly of the Armenian capital) is discussing today the appointment of Tigran Avinyan, chairman of the board of the Armenian National Interest Foundation (ANIF) and former Deputy Prime Minister, as the capital's vice-mayor.

Previously, Avinyan told reporters that he was picked up by the ruling Civil Contract party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as a candidate for mayor of the Armenian capital. The elections are to be held in the autumn of 2023.

Earlier, Yerevan's incumbent mayor Hrachya Sargsyan said Avinyan will be officially nominated for the post of mayor at the next elections to Yerevan's Council of Elders.

Hrachya Sargsyan officially took office on December 25, 2021. Three days earlier, the capital's Council of Elders impeached Hayk Marutyan, who had been mayor since September 2018. Marutyan's impeachment was initiated by the Civil Contract party because of his disagreements with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Later, by a vote of 44 to 2 abstentions Avinyan was elected vice-mayor. -0- -0-
