Cape Town - The police captain who allegedly helped a suspected gun thief escape has a family history of crime.

The alleged illegal activities of Captain Ella Elizabeth Moses’ relatives were used against her on Wednesday as argument that she should be denied bail.

Moses, 46, applied for bail at the Kuils River Magistrates’ Court.

She was arrested on September 30, and charged with defeating the ends of justice after she and her nephew, known only as Llewellyn, allegedly stopped police from arresting a man found to be in possession of a stolen gun.

The 24-year-old alleged criminal was rearrested on Friday at his house in Carmen Street, Scottsdene.

On Wednesday, Captain Jonathan Amon from the Anti-Corruption Unit, testified that police went to Joseph Street after receiving a tip-off about an armed man walking in the street.

He says the accused tried to run from the cops before reaching into his pocket for a gun.

Amon explains: “The officers grabbed him and as he was arrested he screamed ‘Kaptein’.

“A Toyota Tazz arrived and a man came out and told the officers they could not arrest the suspect.

“He tried to grab one of the officers’ guns and at the same time [Moses] came around and also said they couldn’t arrest the suspect.

“She then pushed the officers and told the suspect to run.”

Sergeant Gerald Alexander, from Kraaifontein SAPS, confirmed Moses has a history of “interfering” in police matters.

He said the first incident was when a large sum of money and tik was found at her family home in Joseph Street during a raid.

Moses came to the police station afterwards to fetch the money, claiming it belonged to her.

Alexander says: “The second time was at another raid in Patricia Street and she stood at a corner and took a video of our members.

“Joseph Street is a major headache for [the police], especially house number three where the accused’s sister, Dina, sells alcohol all day.

“Gangsters are everywhere, Llewellyn is not a gangster but Warren [the gun suspect] is a member of the 26s and the RBK gang.

“The RBK gang is controlled by the Simon brothers who are the accused’s nephews.”

Moses denied knowing Warren, but admitted she knew what was happening at her family’s house.

Asked why she did not report it, she said “it’s been going on for years” and her reporting it “wouldn’t change anything”.

The matter continues on Friday.
