Armenia to build dam on River Araks to restore its previous bed
YEREVAN, June 30. /ARKA/. The Armenian government decided today to release 22.38 million drams to finance a plan designed to restore the bed of the border River Araks to its previous state to avoid further collapses.
According to the press service of the government, a 6.5 km long section of the bed running along the border with Turkey is necessary to restore and eliminate one of the tributaries, which caused the collapse of part of the river bed.
The dam to be built at the respective border section will divert waters to the former course and restore a 130m long and 8m deep embankment.
The Araks River is one of the biggest rivers in the South Caucasus. It rises in eastern Turkey and flows along the borders between Turkey and Armenia, between Turkey and the Nakhichevan exclave of Azerbaijan, between Iran and both Azerbaijan and Armenia, and, finally, through Azerbaijan where it flows into the Kura River.($1 - 407.21 AMD). --0--
