Armenia can not divide the world into friends and enemies
YEREVAN, October 5. / ARKA /. Speaking October 1 in a “reference-free” discussion held by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in New York Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan said
being a small country Armenia does not want and can not divide the world into friends and enemies.
He said Armenia is being guided by the evolutionary and balanced policy without creating problems for the countries which have their interests in the region and is not a hotbed of crisis.
"I think this approach fully fits into the logic of the XXI century; moreover, the reality shows that political decisions based on contradictions, to put it mildly, are not favorable for the country and for the entire international community. In some cases, we have seen this quite recently, ‘he was quoted as saying by Panorama.am.
According to the president, the South Caucasus is often regarded as a scene of geopolitical competition, but on the other hand, the presence in the region of interests of different actors can be seen as an opportunity.
The president stressed that since the first days of its independence, Armenia has been building relations with any country or international organization, being guided by ‘in the name ideology’, not "against."
"So, as a founding member of the CSTO, the presidency in which has passed to us recently, we have established long-term and good cooperation with NATO, a clear indication of which is the utilization of the Alliance’s army building experience, as well as Armenia’s practical participation in various peacekeeping missions," Sargsyan said.
He said that after becoming a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, Armenia has given a new impetus to political and economic rapprochement with the EU, proving the thesis that combining relations with the European Union and Eurasian partners is entirely possible.
He said concurrently with strengthening of strategic cooperation with Russia, Armenia has developed excellent relations with almost all Western countries. Finally, being the first Christian nation in the world, Armenia has strong historical and bilateral relations with many Muslim countries.
However, according to him, it is no secret that being under the daily threat of renewed war, the starting point of any decision taken in Armenia is ensuring security of the country, which often determines this or that choice.-0-
