Champions League failure may open eyes at Arsenal according to AP McCoy

Arsenal supporter AP McCoy believes failing to progress from the group stage of the Champions League this season could be a massive wake-up call for the club.

The champion jockey is a huge Gunners fan but has bene unhappy in recent seasons as Arsene Wenger's sides continue to come up short in their chase for the Premier League title while continually bowing out at the Round of 16 stage in Europe.

In the wake of Tuesday night's 3-2 home loss to Olympiakos, McCoy suggests that perhaps an extremely poor campaign in Europe's elite company will force the club to act in the transfer market and build a team capable of constant success.

"It was a poor all-round performance to get beat by Olympiakos," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"We can keep making excuses but in the end results are not stacking up so they are not playing well enough and they need to be better and they need to make changes.

"Bayern Munich were 4-0 up after no time against Dynamo Kiev so it's going to be very hard for them to qualify from the group.

"In some ways I am kind of hoping that they don't so they realise that they need to make changes and that they do need to be better."

He added: "I am a fan of the manager, Arsene Wenger is a fantastic manager.

"To be fair Theo [Walcott] and [Alexis] Sanchez have started scoring in the last few games so I think it's more of having a holding defensive midfielder who has a bit of a presence and is a leader.

"I think he should buy someone like [Paul] Pogba who has a real presence and that could make us into a proper team."
