Barclays is closing my current account after 49 years' loyalty because I live abroad, even though I plan to move back to the UK – can the banking giant do this?

I moved to St Vincent and the Grenadines in 1999 with my husband. We've had a Barclays account since 1966 and have my pension paid into it. Now, the bank is closing it. Can it do this?
