Veolia Group seeks to assume management of all Armenian water distribution networks
YEREVAN, September 30. / ARKA /. French Veolia Group will seek to assume the management of all Armenian water distribution networks, Gor Grigoryan, CEO of Yerevan Jur company, told a news conference today.
There are five water distribution operators in the country -Yerevan Jur (Yerevan Water), Armenian Water and Sewerage Company, Lori Water Canal, Shirak Water Canal and Nor Akunk. The agreements for the management of Yerevan Jur and Armenian Water and Sewerage Company expire on May 31, 2016. By a government decision both companies will be combined for handing to a concessional management of a single operator, which will be chosen in a tender.
"Veolia Group, being one of the leading operators in the world, will naturally take part in the tender and hopes to win,' said Grigoryan. He said the requirements for the new operator will be determined by the government.
On February 19 the Armenian government decided to set up an inter-agency commission for the selection of an operator to run water distribution companies.
Armenian Water and Sewerage Company has been run since 2004 by French company, Saur SA. The agreement with it was extended in 2011 until 2013 with the option of extension for another year. The company's service area includes 37 cities and 268 rural communities in 10 regions of Armenia.
Yerevan Jur is run by French Veolia Generale des Eaux that won an international tender announced by World Bank to take up a long-term management of the Yerevan network in 2006. It pledged to upgrade the obsolete network and ensure 24-hour water supplies to households. The company manages also drinking and waste water removal systems in Ararat, Aragatsotn and Kotayk provinces. ($1 – 475.81 drams). ---0-----
