“Can you show me how tender you can be?”
It’s interesting that critics discussing French filmmaker Gaspar Noé's latest provocation “Love,” a daring sexual melodrama shot in 3D, always focus on all the sucking, fucking, three ways and stereoscopic money shots. It makes for good copy, and it’s certainly a big part of the film. But that’s really only half of a work which is also a melancholy meditation on past loves, is a little self-absorbed at times (Jessica Kiang breaks that down well in her review from Cannes) and which bespeaks genuine tenderness. It’s a hardcore movie, but in many ways it's provacateur Noé's most mature and possibly autobiographical film.
