Energy programs should serve mutually beneficial cooperation and prosperity, Armenian minister says
YEREVAN, 29 September. / ARKA /. In a keynote speech at the 6th international forum on energy for sustainable development that has brought to the Armenian capital city some 250 representatives from 50 countries, Armenian energy and natural resources minister Yervand Zakharyan said it was a great honor for Armenia to host this prestigious forum.
'I hope that the forum will become a practical platform for discussion of issues of common interest and seeking solutions to the challenges we are facing," he said.
According to him, the role of energy in the modern world is impossible to overestimate as geopolitical developments are directly or indirectly linked to energy.
"It is necessary to ensure that energy programs in the world do not lead to confrontations and conflicts, but serve a mutually beneficial cooperation and prosperity. Armenia emphasizes development of its own energy resources, particularly of renewable energy resources, as well as international cooperation in this area", said Zakharyan.
The Permanent Representative of the UNDP in Armenia Bradley Buzetto noted in turn that the sustainable development strategy adopted by courtiers in New York two days ago offers a roadmap for countries to meet the sustainable development goals by 2030, particularly goal 7 calls for governments to ensure access to sustainable energy by 2030.
In reference to Armenia he said sources of renewable energy here make still a small percentage, with Armenia relying largely on the import of energy resources, but "we hope that this conference will contribute to its movement in the right direction."
"Our goal at the UN is to inform the public about the effectiveness of renewable energy. The UN and UNIDO work with Armenia for a long time, helping it to improve the legislative field, adopt the best world experience in various fields of energy. We are working to improve energy efficiency, for example, in the housing sector. Yerevan has also joined the Covenant of Mayors program and is moving in the direction of green smart cities," said Buzetto.
The forum is organized by the Ministry of Energy of Armenia, the UN regional commissions, the regional center of UNDP, UNIDO. The event will last until October 2. -0-
