Mossel Bay - A PetroSA employee died after falling 10 metres at the Mossel Bay Gas to Liquids (GTL) Refinery on Saturday, the parastatal said.

The 45-year-old male employee was fatally injured when he fell from a height of 10 metres during a planned maintenance operation at the refinery, PetroSA said in a statement on Sunday.

“The employee’s next of kin have been informed about the tragic incident. PetroSA is providing support and counselling services to the family of the deceased and [PetroSA] employees.”

PetroSA and the SA Police Service were investigating the incident.

All other relevant authorities, including the Inspector of Mines and the labour department, were being informed.

An investigation into the incident would start on Monday.

“As PetroSA we are deeply saddened and our employees are traumatised by the tragic loss of a colleague,” PetroSA acting group CEO Mapula Modipa said in the statement.

“We will fully co-operate with all investigations into the incident. At PetroSA strict adherence to safety is sacrosanct and we therefore wish to quickly get to the bottom of how this incident happened, with a view to ensuring we prevent such occurrences in future,” Modipa said.
