KwaZulu-Natal police top brass told the family of the slain Inanda policeman that they had arrested three men in connection with the ambush killing.
On Tuesday two Inanda police station officers were overpowered and disarmed while in the Namibia informal settlement in Inanda serving a protection order.
They were locked in the back of the police van and driven to another location where they were shot. One survived and is in hospital.
Before dawn on Wednesday police had arrested three men in Mariannhill for the attack.
On Wednesday Provincial Commissioner, KZN Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, visited the family of the dead man, Sergeant Vusimuzi Moyana, 39, in Ntuzuma.
The media and a police contingent were greeted by hymns from the mourning family.
The family did not want to speak to the media because they were in mourning.
Ngobeni entered the home to sympathise with the family. They were also informed of the arrests.
Moyana is the father of three girls and two boys.
The injured policewoman Sergeant Jabu Jojisa is recovering in hospital.
At a media briefing at Inanda police station, Ngobeni congratulated police on the arrests.
“While we are still in shock after the callous attack on our police officers, it is comforting to know that the perpetrators are behind bars. We hope that these arrests bring relief to the grieving families of our police officers,” she said.
Ngobeni also reminded criminals not to underestimate the resources police have at their disposal to make arrests and recover firearms.
The three alleged murder suspects were hiding in the Mpola area of Mariannhill when they were caught.
“Police recovered three firearms including the two that were taken from the police officers. An AK-47 was also found.
“The police officers’ uniforms and cellphones were also found with the arrested men,” Ngobeni said.
The arrested men are aged between 18 and 26.
They will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as kidnapping.
It is alleged that the police officers were overpowered by three suspects and stripped of their police uniforms. They were locked in the back of the police van.
The suspects drove to the Ngcungcwini area where they shot the police officers. Moyana died instantly and Jojisa was wounded. She was later airlifted to hospital.
The suspects ran away leaving the police vehicle behind.
Colleagues of Moyana said the incident had left the police in shock and they would miss their colleague who was always joyful and a dedicated policeman.
