Johannesburg - In the wake of wet and stormy weather across Gauteng on Tuesday morning there was chaos on Joburg’s roads, with 11 people sustaining injuries in separate accidents around the city.

A man believed to be a newspaper seller was knocked down and critically injured by a vehicle on Malibongwe Drive while three people were left with moderate injuries and two others with minor injuries in a five-car pile-up on the N1 near Olifantsfontein.

In a separate accident, two people sustained minor injuries after a car overturned on Modderfontein Road next to Greenstone Mall.

An accident in Parkview left two people with minor injuries after a vehicle lost control and hit a tree on the corner of Lower Park Drive and Roscommon Road.

Two more accidents 1km apart left two people in Olivedale with minor to moderate injuries.

A number of bumper bashings were also reported with no injuries sustained.

According to Emer-G-Med spokeswoman Danielle Dooley, all injured patients were transported to hospitals in the vicinity of the accident scenes.

Johannesburg metro police department spokesman Wayne Minnaar advised motorists to “exercise caution when driving in this weather as cars are easily skidding out of control” in the first rains of the season.

ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing also advised motorists to drive with their headlights on and to keep a safe following distance between vehicles.
