– Ekurhuleni on Sunday rejected suggestions it will not pay staff the full salary increase agreed to in the local government collective bargaining council agreement.

“The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to dispel rumours that it is planning to pay staff salaries below the collective bargaining council agreement of seven percent,” spokesman Themba Gadebe said in a statement.

“The matter will further be clarified this week at a council meeting. We wish to assure all staff that we will not be implementing anything less than the agreement of the bargaining council.”

This had been cleared with organised labour in the city, he said.

On Saturday, the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) claimed to have received “written communication” from Ekurhuleni “indicating that the municipal council had budgeted for a 6.8 percent wage and salary increase for this financial year, hence they will be unable to pay workers the agreed upon seven percent”.

“Ekurhuleni municipality is acting outside the collective agreement; an agreement which it is party of,” Samwu said.
