Looking for change? Spring into action!
As the year winds down, it’s a good time to assess your circumstances and map out a new way forward, says Tumi Sibanda.
|||Johannesburg - It is now spring, and springtime is associated with new beginnings, good new beginnings.
Good new beginnings mean different things for different people at different times of their lives. What will your new beginnings be this spring?
What good opportunities are you unveiling? What breakthroughs are you working towards? What mistakes are you rectifying? What plans are you unfolding?
These questions and more are relevant for all of us whether it’s January or September. It’s a time to freshen up our lives. It’s a case of “in with the new and out with old”. For some of us, this time happens during our birthday months or any anniversary. It doesn’t matter when it happens, what matters is what you do with this opportunity to freshen up your life.
The year has progressed, and only you know whether it’s progressing well for you. Whatever the case, this is a good time to assess your circumstances and map out a new way forward.
If the year is progressing well and the plans you put in place at the beginning of the year are going well, congratulations. I invite you to use this time to recharge so that you’re ready for the last stretch of the year. Look at your life as a whole and determine which area you have neglected.
Make the necessary adjustments to enable you to enjoy your achievements without regrets at a later stage.
It’s important to care for all areas of your life; success in one area that comes at the expense of other areas isn’t success at all.
If your year isn’t progressing well, acknowledging that things aren’t going well is a good starting point.
The next step is to assess what your role towards your current circumstances has been. Acknowledging your contribution to your circumstances puts you in control to make things better.
The next step is equally important. To enable you to make the necessary changes, it’s important for you to want to make those changes. The next thing is for you to commit to doing something about putting those changes in motion. All these are things that need to happen in your head even before a plan of how to change things can be put on paper.
Without this shift in mindset, any plan put together can end up being a futile exercise. So face yourself, tell yourself the truth you need to hear, and make the necessary mind shift.
Once you’ve committed to making the changes, go ahead and put a plan together.
Establish what you need to continue doing; what you should stop doing; and what you ought to start doing.
A plan on its own will not bring about the desired change; action will.
