Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni has dismissed suggestions that Premier Senzo Mchunu is a suspect in the recent murder of one of his bodyguards.

Mchunu reportedly criticised the police this week for their handling of bodyguard Xolani Nkosi’s murder in Empangeni in July, and hinted that some fellow ANC members had encouraged the police to link him to the murder.

KwaZulu-Natal police said in a statement Ngobeni had taken note of the premier’s concerns regarding the investigation into the murder.

The commissioner would meet the investigation team and had promised to personally oversee the investigation.

“Once she has all the relevant facts she will brief the premier and the Transport, Community Safety MEC, and liaison on the status of the investigation,” spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said.

“I want to categorically state that at no stage was the premier a suspect in the murder and I am concerned that such unfounded allegations have surfaced. I will ensure that the investigation team is doing everything that they possibly can to finalise the investigation as soon as possible,” Ngobeni said in the statement.

Nkosi was found dead with multiple bullet wounds in Empangeni in July, reportedly fueling conspiracy theories that his murder may have been a politically motivated revenge killing.
