Cops bust drug lab in Sandton

Police raided a house in Sandton and arrested one person after finding drugs worth an estimated R20 million.

Johannesburg - One person was in police custody on Friday after being arrested in connection with a R20 million drug bust at a house in Sandton in Johannesburg, the Hawks said.

The Hawks raided the house, which they later discovered was an illegal drug laboratory, on Thursday night after a tip-off, Hawks spokesman Robert Netshiunda said.

“During a raid two suspects jumped over the high wall in an attempt to flee the scene. One was arrested while the other managed to escape and the Hawks are following strong leads to have him and probably many others behind bars,” said Netshiunda.

“Thousands of Mandrax tablets, methaqualone, a pressing machine, and liquid as well as powder chemicals were found inside the house and a cottage.”

The suspect, 28, would appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
