Johannesburg - A taxi driver on Friday testified in the murder trial of Sindisiwe Manqele, the lover of hip hop artist Nkululeko “ Flabba” Habedi, that she asked him to fetch her on the night of the musician’s death because she did not want to go home with him.

Khumbulani told the Randburg High Court, sitting in the magistrate’s court, that Manqele was a regular customer of his and said it was true that he had received several calls from her in the hours before Hadebi was stabbed to death.

According to her testimony, she had asked him called him to collect her from The Sands night club in Sandton because she did not want to leave with Habedi.

“It was well after midnight,” Ncube said.

“She wanted me to pick her up from the night club.”

Ncube added that he went to the club and called her three times without success.

“On the fourth attempt she answered and told me that she had already left,” Ncube said.

He said it was the first time that Manqele had ever made him wait in vain.

“I couldn’t understand the mood she was in because I was irritated about waiting such a long time,” Ncube said.

Ncube stated that he had saved Manqele’s name as her address in Kempton Park, so he knew who he was talking too.

“I presumed that she wanted me to drop her there,” Ncube said.

When questioned by state prosecutor Paul Schutter, Ncube contradicted Manqele’s testimony in one regard. He said he knew how to get to The Sands and did not ask Manqele for directions, as she had indicated.

On Thursday, Manqele had conceded in her testimony that she had intentionally stabbed Habedi, but said she had pushed and stabbed him in an attempt to get away from him and had not meant to kill him.

Gasps could be heard from the public gallery as she made the admission.

Manqele also admitted to being jealous of the other relationships Habedi was involved in.

“It’s natural. What woman wouldn’t be,” Manqele said.

Manqele has pleaded not guilty to the murder and claims she was trying to protect herself from her violent lover.
