Government releases 5 million drams for Independence Day festive concerts
YEREVAN, September 17. / ARKA /. The Armenian government on Thursday approved the release of 5 million drams to Opera and Ballet Theatre for conducting several festive events to mark the Day of Independence.
Culture minister Hasmik Poghosyan said the bulk of the money will be spent on the conduction of a gala concert on September 21 at Theater (Liberty) Square and another concert on September 20 in the Opera and Theater Ballet building.
Armenia's Independence Day is celebrated on September 21. On this day in 1991 the Supreme Council of the republic, guided by the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, adopted a decision to hold a referendum on the territory of the republic to secede from the Soviet Union and establish an independent state.
The vast majority of Armenian citizens – over 2 million or 94.39% of eligible voters- said "yes" to independence. Based on the results of the referendum, on September 23, 1991 the Supreme Council of the republic declared Armenia an independent state. ($ 1 - 482.76 Drams) -0-
