‘Would-be cowboy’ clocks 200km/h

A man who drove through a Durbanville roadblock was clocked driving at 204km/h in the ensuing high speed chase.

Cape Town – Traffic officers nabbed dozens of drunk drivers over the weekend, including a man who drove through a roadblock and was clocked driving over 200 kilometres an hour during an ensuing high speed chase, the City of Cape Town said on Monday.

The driver refused to stop when officers instructed him to do so at a roadblock in Durbanville Avenue.

Traffic officers gave chase. During the chase, the driver collided with another vehicle, and drove through a speed check where he was clocked driving at 204 kilometres per hour in a 60 km per hour zone.

He eventually lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree at the intersection of Durban Road and Frans Conradie Drive.

“By behaving in this manner, this motorist not only put his own life and the lives of other road users and members of the public at risk, but also caused himself unnecessary problems,” said JP Smith, the city’s mayoral committee member for safety and security.

“He should not have been behind the wheel drunk but if he had simply stopped when asked, he would have faced a single charge. Now he is having to deal with an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving and will probably have to face the insurance nightmare that comes with crashing his vehicle and colliding with another motorist. I hope this serves as a warning to the other would-be cowboys on our roads.”

At the same roadblock in Durbanville, 28 motorists were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, and another five drivers were arrested for reckless and negligent driving.
