Unregistered auditor in dock
A Tokai woman has appeared in a court in the Belliville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, charged with illegally practicing as an auditor.
|||Cape Town - A woman appeared in a court in Cape Town on Monday, charged with illegally practicing as an auditor.
Lesley McGoldrick, 52, of Tokai in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, was not asked to plead when she appeared in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, before magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg.
According to the charge sheet, the Auditing Profession Act requires an auditor offering his or her services to the public, for reward, to be registered with the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors.
The charge sheet says the Board keeps a register of practicing auditors.
According to the charge sheet, an auditor who is not registered may not pretend to be registered, perform any auditing duties, or engage in public practice.
Such a person may also not hold himself or herself out to be registered as an auditor.
According to the charge sheet, McGoldrick was duly registered as a auditor, but her registration had later lapsed.
Prosecutor Tracy Belelie alleges that McGoldrick signed documents as if she were still a registered auditor, and quoted an Audit Board registration number.
It is also alleged that she described herself as an auditor and chartered accountant, and provided auditing services for reward.
She is charged with violating the Auditing Profession Act by practicing as an unregistered public auditor.
According to the charge sheet, the penalty for such a violation is an unspecified fine or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years, or both.
