The Rugby World Cup kicks off this week. We’ve selected what we think are the five best memories from previous tournaments.

5. NEW ZEALAND V ITALY (Auckland 1987)

John Kirwan's length-of-the-field score paved the way for the All Blacks to win the inaugural Rugby World Cup.

4. AUSTRALIA V IRELAND, QUARTER-FINAL (Dublin 1991)

The Lansdowne Road faithful roared Gordon Hamilton all the way to the try line to put Ireland on the verge of a semi-final appearance. Sadly for them, Michael Lynagh had other ideas, scoring a try, and the Wallabies won 19-18.

3. AUSTRALIA V ENGLAND, (Marseille) NEW ZEALAND V FRANCE, (Cardiff), QUARTER-FINALS, 2007)

The two southern hemisphere giants were knocked out within hours of each other thanks to starring roles from Andrew Sheridan and Frederic Michalak.

2. ENGLAND V AUSTRALIA, WORLD CUP FINAL (SYDNEY 2003)

Jonny Wilkinson had already missed three drop goals but deep into extra-time he tried a fourth (on his wrong foot) and nailed it to win the trophy.

1. SOUTH AFRICA V NEW ZEALAND, WORLD CUP FINAL (Joh'burg, 1995)
