Few actors scream "authority" the way that Robert Redford does. In his now fifty-year career as one of the biggest stars around, the actor’s built up a relationship with his audience, and in the last few years he’s been able to both beautifully play up to it (as with “All Is Lost,” where we root for him despite the lack of backstory to his character), or play against it (as with his canny casting as a villain in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”).
That quality makes him perfect to play another authority figure, trusted newsman Dan Rather, in the upcoming “Truth,” the directorial debut from “Zodiac” writer James Vanderbilt. The film, compared to “All The President’s Men” and “The Insider,” tells the true story of how Rather and his producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) broke the story that President George W. Bush might have gone AWOL during his time in the National Guard, only for problems to emerge with the piece that essentially ended Rather’s career.
