Deputy foreign minister defends Armenia’s membership in Eurasian economic union

YEREVAN, September 10. / ARKA /. Deputy Armenian foreign minister Shavarsh Kocharyan has defended today Armenia’s accession to the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), saying the accession has given Armenia an array of economic benefits, which it should only take advantage of.

"Armenia’s membership in the EEU has strengthened economic preconditions for its security; not only in what is related to defense, but also in terms of economic benefits, because the EEU is purely an economic organization," he said.

Kocharyan explained he was talking about the possibility of increasing the state budget revenues, which will enable the country to withstand the arms race imposed (by Azerbaijan). With regard to purely economic benefits, according to the deputy minister, an accession to economic bloc provides benefits in the form of free movement of goods and capital.

"From this perspective, Armenia’s joining the EEU did not require a long time to adapt, while  European integration experience shows that it took many countries years to achieve the level of compliance of  goods, and some countries still have not achieved it,"  said Kocharyan.

He said that in terms of quality of goods, standards and regulations Armenia is not inferior to other members of the trade bloc and in some areas is even ahead of neighboring states.

"Therefore, membership in the EEU has provided Armenia with economic benefits, and this opportunity should be used well", said Kocharyan. -- 0--
