Kuala Lumpur - An Indonesian man was fined 5 000 ringgit (1 150 dollars) on Thursday for threatening to blow up a plane at Malaysia’s Penang airport, a deputy public prosecutor said.

Farmer Bob Halim Lim pleaded guilty to criminal intimidation at a court in Penang, a tourist destination in northern Malaysia, for threatening to blow up a plane during an argument with airline counter staff, deputy public prosecutor Shafid Mahadi said.

The 61-year-old Lim, from North Sumatra, was detained by police on Wednesday after the angry exchange with airline staff, who had told him that his luggage exceeded the maximum allowable weight, Shafid said.

Lim apologised for his action in Penang Sessions Court and paid the fine.

Criminal intimidation in Malaysia carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment.
