Rustenburg - The Madibeng local municipality in North West on Wednesday dismissed claims that six vehicles had been repossessed due to non payment.

Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader in Madibeng, Eddie Barlow said on Tuesday that the party was concerned after six leased municipal bakkies were repossessed due to non-payment.

“It is common sense that the Democratic Alliance has full access to the municipal information and records at all times, however, they have made it their business to release selected inaccurate information to the public for cheap political gains,” said municipal spokesperson Sipho Nkosi.

He said it was true that Avis collected the vehicles on Monday, but said it was not as a result of that that the municipality was unable to service the lease as indicated by the DA.

“The municipality wish to put on record that it has been ceremoniously honouring all the required payments to Avis [Rustenburg], and the current misunderstanding emanates from their head office. [That is], our debt has been and is still on current account.”

He said the misunderstanding was being attended to, by both Avis and the municipality.

DA caucus leader Eddie Barlow said the six bakkies were used by the department of technical services, mainly for maintenance work on roads and storm water drainage among other work.

“This is a huge blow for the municipality, who already has limited capacity to function effectively. The DA was reliably told that the vehicles were repossessed after the municipality failed to pay the leasing company for a few months,” said Barlow.

Nkosi said the municipality leased the six bakkies to add to its growing fleet of vehicles.
