UNHCR Calls on Hungary to Improve Migrant Registration Procedures

The United Nations refugee agency on Tuesday called on Hungary to improve the registration process and reception conditions for asylum-seekers.

It also called on Hungarian authorities to implement the recently adopted national legislation in accordance with the EU and international law and to differentiate those in need of international protection from those who are not in need.

“We are looking to Hungary to work with UNHCR in partnership to deal with the humanitarian needs of those arriving in the country,” Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR's Regional Refugee Coordinator for the Refugee Crisis in Europe, said in a statement.

Over 150,000 refugees and migrants have crossed into Hungary from Serbia since January this year with the daily average remaining at around 2,000 since last month, the UNHCR said, adding that more people are expected to arrive during the coming months.

Some 30,000 people in Greece are on the move with around 3,000 leaving Greece for Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary each day, the UN refugee agency said.
