Two arrested for R2m perlemoen
Two suspects were arrested in Khayelitsha after they were found in possession of perlemoen.
|||Cape Town - Two people were arrested in Khayelitsha, Western Cape after they were found in possession of perlemoen worth R2 million, police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said police received information about a vehicle transporting perlemoen, also referred to as abalone, from Gansbaai to Cape Town.
“At approximately 8:30am the white Volkswagen panel van was pulled over at the corners of Bonga and Japhta Masemola roads. Upon searching the vehicle police recovered numerous plastic bags of shucked abalone. The occupants of the vehicle, a man, 27, and a woman, 31, both from Khayelitsha, were arrested,” said van Wyk.
“Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries were called to the police station where the abalone was counted. It amounted to 8,396 units of shucked abalone with an estimated value of R2 million.”
The two suspects were expected to appear the in Khayelitsha Magistrates Court soon on charges of possession of perlemoen.
