YEREVAN, September 8. / ARKA /. Armenia intends to join European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, education and science ministry’s official website says.  Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation program ever with nearly 80 billion euro funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) in addition to the private investment that this money will attract.

The decision was announced at a meeting today attended by education and science minister Armen Ashotyan, president of the National Academy of Sciences Radik Martirosyan, chairman of the State Committee for Science Samvel Harutyunyan, as well as representatives of relevant government departments.

According to the ministry of education and science, a portion of 14.4 billion dram funding for financing research projects for 2016 will be earmarked as membership fee. It is expected that in the future the program will enable Armenian researches to seek grants for their projects.

Horizon 2020 is presented as the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness.

Horizon 2020 is open to everyone, with a simple structure that reduces red tape and time so participants can focus on what is really important. This approach makes sure new projects get off the ground quickly – and achieve results faster.  ($ 1-485.18 drams). - 0-
