South Caucasus Railway to repair another 50 km of track

YEREVAN, September 8. / ARKA /. The South Caucasus Railway (SCR), a subsidiary of state-owned Russian Railways, operating Armenia’s rail roads, will have repaired another 50 kilometers of track this year, in addition to 400 km it has repaired since its inception, SCR CEO Viktor Rebets told at a meeting of the CIS  Rail Transport Council in Yerevan today.

He said also the total length of track rated as ‘unsatisfactory’, requiring speed limit has been shortened from 300 km in 2009 to 6 km today.

According to him, the SCR has replaced 700,000 sleepers that has enabled freight trains to increase their speed by an average of 5 km/h. Besides, derailing rate of 96 in 2009 was brought down to 9 in 2014. He said no such accident was reported this year.

The two-day Yerevan gathering has brought here railway experts and officials from Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Estonia.

South Caucasus Railways is a 100% subsidiary of state-run Russian Railways that was awarded a concesional management of SCR. The 30 year contract was signed in 2008. It can be prolonged for another 10 years. -0-
