Bulgarian authorities detained forty immigrants in the village of Golyamo Buchino near the city of Pernik on Thursday evening.

The origin and identity of the immigrants, who were transported by cars from Sofia, are in the process of being established, private bTV station informs.

Medical aid has been provided to the immigrants, who were abandoned on the motorway and it still remains unclear whether someone had to pick them up from the location.

The director of the district directorate of the police in Pernik, Valentin Buchinski, said that refugees were detained in this area for the first time.

The arrested immigrants, including twenty men, 14 women and five children, are from Syria and they entered into Bulgaria without documents.

They have passed the primary interviews and procedures required for granting them refugee status.

The district governor of Pernik, Irena Sokolova, assured that food, shelter and water have been provided to the immigrants until their situation is being clarified.

The State Agency for Refugees (DAB) has been informed of the immigrants and NGOs have provided assistance to them.
